1. Explain why Kevin "Freak" gives Max the empty book.  What was the "real" purpose of the empty book?

2. With whom is Max angry with when he realizes Freak is dead? Why? What helps him get over his anger?

3. Explain the quote from Loretta Lynn on p. 160, when she says, "Nothing is a drag, kid.  Think about it."


4. Now that the book is finished...what are your thoughts about it? Did you like or dislike the book? Why or why not?

POST #5

·         Reread Chapter 17, "By All That's Holy" and answer the following question. Why do you think Max agrees with his father, who says, “I Kenneth David Kane, do swear by all that’s Holy that I did not murder this boy’s mother..." (p.113)? What does the story Kenny "Killer" Kane tells about the “injustice” that was done to him, tell you about him as a person and a father?

POST #4

1)     What do we find out about Kevin’s father by the end of chapter 11? How do you feel about Kevin’s father being a “magician”?

2)   Why is Freak’s Christmas gift of the pyramid-shaped box and handwritten dictionary so important to Max?

3)    What type of author craft did Rodman Philbrick use to describe the conflict of the story: When Max's Dad, KILLER KANE comes back for Max in the basement? Give examples from the text.

4)    Let us play pretend for a moment...pretend that Freak was a student in our school...would you want Freak as your friend? Would you treat Kevin "Freak" differently than your other classmates? WHY OR WHY NOT? BE HONEST.

POST # 3

1. How does Freak get Max out of his room? What is "magic" about their quests?

2. Reread Chapter 9, that's right go back and RE-READ chapter 9 and answer the following quesions:

a. Why do you think it is so important for Freak to take Max to see the hospital?

b. Does Freak really believe that he will be “the first bionically improved human” by having a body transplant?

POST #2

1. At the end of Chapter 5, “Spitting Image” why do you think when Max lies down to go to bed he cries? (p. 27)

2. Do our opinions of ourselves affect what others think of us? Do other’s opinions of us affect how we feel about ourselves? Use examples from the book.
